Poltrona Frau
company history

Poltrona Frau, founded in 1912 by Renzo Frau in Turin, has become an icon of Italian craftsmanship and design. Initially focused on creating elegant armchairs inspired by classical models, the company quickly gained a reputation for quality and attention to detail. By the 1930s, Poltrona Frau was furnishing Italy’s most prestigious buildings, including government offices and theaters, establishing itself as a leader in high-end furniture.

During the mid-20th century, Poltrona Frau expanded its offerings, introducing innovative designs that blended tradition with modern aesthetics. Their expertise in leatherwork, particularly with the development of the proprietary Pelle Frau® leather, became a defining characteristic of the brand, solidifying its position in the luxury market.

In the 1960s, the company transitioned its operations to Tolentino, where it remains headquartered today. This move marked a period of growth and diversification, with Poltrona Frau entering the international market and beginning collaborations with renowned designers and architects. The brand’s timeless designs, such as the iconic Vanity Fair armchair, continued to embody elegance and quality, becoming emblematic of luxury Italian furniture.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw Poltrona Frau extend its influence into new sectors, including automotive interiors and luxury yachts. The company established itself as a go-to partner for high-profile projects, working with brands like Ferrari and Maserati to design bespoke interiors. Poltrona Frau’s commitment to combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology has enabled it to stay relevant across generations.

The opening of the Poltrona Frau Museum in 2012 was a significant milestone in the company’s history. Located in Tolentino, the museum not only showcases the brand’s heritage but also serves as a center for cultural exchange and research in the fields of design and craftsmanship. This initiative reflects Poltrona Frau’s dedication to preserving its legacy while fostering innovation and creativity.

Poltrona Frau’s collections today cover a wide range of products, from home and office furnishings to custom interior solutions for theaters and concert halls worldwide. Their pieces, characterized by understated elegance and meticulous craftsmanship, continue to set standards in the luxury market, blending tradition with contemporary influences.

As part of the larger Haworth Group since 2014, Poltrona Frau has expanded its global reach while maintaining its core values. Despite its growth and modern advancements, the brand remains deeply rooted in its artisanal heritage, emphasizing the importance of high-quality materials, particularly leather, and a passion for refined aesthetics.

Looking ahead, Poltrona Frau is committed to sustainability and innovation, striving to create designs that not only reflect modern tastes but also adhere to ethical production practices. This focus ensures that the brand continues to evolve while staying true to the principles that have defined it for over a century.

Today, Poltrona Frau stands as a symbol of Italian excellence, offering products that embody a perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and luxury. Whether furnishing homes, offices, or custom spaces, the brand’s creations continue to inspire and captivate design enthusiasts worldwide.
